Summer Educational Programs
6th through 9th graders
July 6-31

 

If necessary, we are prepared to conduct classes online.

English classes are designed to develop thoughtful readers, writers, and critical thinkers.  Math classes are designed to stimulate critical thinking and build fluency and accuracy in solving math problems.  Instruction is provided in a small group environment by highly qualified, specialized teachers.

PREPARATION FOR MATH AND ENGLISH PROGRAM

NOTE: this class is offered in conjunction with Foundations of Mathematics or Algebra II Readiness

 

Foundations of English

Students will practice close reading skills, using high-quality literature, to become more astute, thoughtful and insightful readers.  They will respond to and analyze the literature in academic discussions and essays. This course provides students with a foundation for grammar and academic essay writing in a small group environment that allows time for ample individual feedback. Students will learn and practice effective skills for brainstorming, organizing, composing, revising and editing essays.  In addition, students will be given a “toolkit” of strategies, academic discourse language, and formats that will benefit their writing in all classes.

Times: Meets 3x a week for 4 weeks on M, W, F from 9:30-12:40

Foundations of Mathematics

The goal of this course is to build fluency, automaticity, and accuracy in various skills using standard algorithms. The following are topics which must be mastered to better the chance of success in algebra and college admissions testing: 

  • Long division
  • Multiple digit multiplication
  • Prime factorization
  • Fractions, mixed numbers, improper fractions
  • Percents
  • Ratios
  • Fraction/decimal/percent  conversions
  • Exponents

NOTE: Word problems dealing with the above will be used extensively.

Grades: 6th – 9th grade
Times: Meets 3x a week for 4 weeks on M, W, F from 9:30-12:40

Algebra II Readiness –  This course will reinforce, develop, and master skills to build the foundation and knowledge required for success in Algebra II.   It will revisit basic skills from middle school, as well as practice previously-learned algebraic concepts. The topics covered will be:

  • Order of Operations
  • Linear Equations
  • Rules of Exponents
  • Solving Multi-Step Equations
  • Simplifying Radicals
  • Simplifying Polynomial Expressions
  • Quadratic Relationships
  • Systems of Equations/Inequalities
  • Basic Geometry  

Grades: 8th – 9th grade
Times: Meets 3x a week for 4 weeks on M, W, F from 9:30-12:40

ENGLISH COURSES:

 

Foundations in Grammar –   This course will teach the grammar concepts necessary for a solid foundation in writing. Students will learn : what makes a sentence complete, compound and complex; where and when commas are needed; and how to employ these rules in their own writing. Knowing the fundamental rules of grammar enables students to be more articulate, sophisticated, and confident writers.

Grades: 6th – 9th grade
Times: Meets 3x a week for 4 weeks on M, W, F from 11-12

Creative Writing –

 The possibilities are endless in this class for writing, presenting, and savouring the art of storytelling. This course offers students the opportunity to write with guided instruction in a variety of creative forms:  poetry, short story, memoir, fairy tales, and more. Every class provides one on one instruction, creative writing tips, inspiring prompts, writing and sharing. 

Grades: 6th – 9th grade
Times: Meets 3x a week for 4 weeks on M, W, F from 12-1

Create Your Own Book Club: These sessions provide the opportunity to read enriching literature with guidance and support.  The literature chosen will be catered to the level and interests of the groups. Yes, this means that students can recommend books, and this class can help satisfy mandated summer reading assignments.  In the book club, students will analyze, discuss, interpret and understand  the literature in depth. They will reflect on texts through a variety of lenses and practice close reading and questioning skills in regular academic discussions. 

Grades: 6th – 9th grade
Times: Meets 2x a week for 4 weeks on Tues.&amp Th. from 10-11

College Essay Writing Workshop:

Does your student need help with his or her college essay?  Colleges want to hear the student’s voice and get a sense of the individual. The essays need to be genuine, personal and concise.  This class will help students to tease out their ideas and craft engaging leads, compelling body paragraphs, and impactful conclusions.  The classes will provide a structured approach to the process and allow time for one on one feedback.

Grades: 6th – 9th grade
Times: Meets 2x a week for 4 weeks on Tues. and Th. from 11-12
Cost: $465
